The Full Story

Over the years, a number of people have asked 'Do you know anything about John Doe? He was my uncle and served in the 106th.'

Feeling pretty useless from the start, all I could do was use Google or go to Jim West's website and search the roster of the 106th. As time marches on, and memories fade, many names may never be remembered -- and that is not acceptable.

I started thinking about where I could go to try and find any small bit of information, and realized all those prior issues of The CUB must have a goldmine of useful references. Seventy years ago the events and names were fresh in everyone's minds -- but how to get at the treasure? Since The CUB for the first 60 years was only available as a printed copy, it would be impossible to read every page and make an index. (Oh, BTW, there are over 6,271 pages!)

Having been a computer geek all my life, and having done something similar for another place I volunteer my time, I decided to see if I could automate the process. Trying not to get too technical, the intended process would go something like this:

Since I have images (.jpg file format) of every page of every CUB on a CD, I would try using some software (OmniPage Pro) to convert the images into a text file.
Next I would review the text file and 'clean up' anything not recognized properly. Due to poor quality images (faded, blury), this started taking way too much time, so I started concentrating on just correcting peoples names.
To build the index, I needed to create what is known as a 'concordance' document. This is simply a two column document where the first column is what text will be searched for (i.e. Wayne G. Dunn) and the second colum will be how you want the index to appear (i.e. Dunn, Wayne G.). Simple right? Well, change from lowercase to uppercase, add or drop a period, allow for variations of only using initials versus full names, places where the name is listed as 'last, first mi' and it starts to get a little tougher. Finally, with some cheating to get names, I started indexing, then verifying, then adding new entries, etc. There are currently 146,374 entries in the concordance file!
Then the issue of how to present all that so people can use it. My plan is to place all the text versions of The CUB online, then post the master index of names, with hyperlinks you can click that will take you to the referenced page.
One other part will be creating an index of the names of articles found in The CUB (i.e. 'What Happened to the 422 Before and After' and placing hyperlinks to the documents.

In mid-2016, as my eyesight went blury, my fingers ached, and my energy level approached zero, I needed to take a break. But suddenly I thought of all the names on the many webpages on Jim West's Indiana Military Organization website... already in 'text' mode! No cursing at OCR! All I had to do was grab a page, strip out the HTML, create the index and proof it!

This is a 'work-in-progress' and will require quite an additional amount of time to be spent. Check back in the future and see how it is going. I will try to keep a log (below) of progress.
