  1. Silver Star for gallantry in action 01/13/1945 in Belgium. When approaching his objective was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Ignoring personal safety and disregarding withering German fire, moved forward encouraging his men to do the same. Fiercely assaulted the hostile position and completely overpowered it, enabling his company to move forward.
  2. Purple Heart 01/14/1945.
  3. Nothing could hold them back. 1st Sergeant Wallace G. Rifleman, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, for example had several pieces of shrapnel crash into his chest. When the medics insisted that he be evacuated, he told them to go to Hell, and led an attack which cleaned out a MG nest. It was that way all along the Company A sector.

Captured 12/19/1944, Richard endured the next four months as a POW in Germany. He first spent several weeks at Stalag IV-B (Mühlberg), then one month at Stalag VIII-A (Görlitz). When advancing Russian troops got close to the camp, prisoners were evacuated; Richard and others from Görlitz were force marched for the next fifty-four days, ending up near the central German city of Braunschweig. Conditions steadily worsened, and hunger and disease claimed the lives of many over these months. His group was near Braunschweig when American troops liberated them on 13 April 1945. Richard was evacuated to hospital in France, then by ship to the US; he spent the time until his discharge in November 1945 in various medical facilities.    1947-03, 1990-4/5/6, Obit from B. 2. Throughout his army career, Clifton was assigned many jobs and was stationed in four different locations throughout the United States and Europe. He was a Squad Leader, Provost Sergeant, Heavy Truck Driver, and a Staff Car Driver. He was first stationed at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia in January of 1940. While there he was a Chief Clerk in the Utilities Department and was in charge of the machine and carpenter shops. He also was an iceman and delivered ice to the officers' quarters. He was fortunate to meet President Theodore Roosevelt while stationed at Fort Monroe. He transported the band that played for the president at all of the functions and was at the dock when the president left the post. Mr. Robbins was later assigned to Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the Sergeant and Squad Leader for the 380th Engineer Combat Battalion. At Fort Pickett in Blackstone, Virginia, he served as Provost Sergeant at the 2nd Army Stockade on special assignment managing 250 American prisoners as well as the American prisoners at the Engineer Stockade. His final assignment was in Heilbronn, Germany where he was a Sergeant with the 106th division and helped manage 125,000 prisoners who were mostly German and Polish. At the end of the war, while in Europe, he drove convoys of prisoners to the towns closest to their homes.

A fellow member of the 106th was buried with him on the day of his death. After six years of burial, the two soldier remains were returned to U.S. soil. Due to the advanced decay the bodies were sort of fused together. 1. Bronze Star (Posthumous) for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy 12/16/1944 in Germany. Under attack by numerically superior forces, with the imminent possibility of his battery being cut off, and although ordered to withdraw, realizing that such action would endanger the rest of the battalion, rallied his men, organized a skirmish line, and fought on, despite the overwhelming odds. When further resistance became impossible, he supervised the destruction of his howitzers to prevent their use by the enemy. Finally taken captive, he refused to remain a prisoner, and was killed in an attempt to escape. GO 1945-077

  1. Lupe was inducted into the United States Army in the fall of 1943. He had obtained a civilian pilot's license while in college and initially trained as a pilot intending to join the Army Air Corps. He was then placed into the 422nd Infantry Regiment, 106th Division as a technical sergeant because the US had an increased need for ground forces. He was deployed to Belgium in November 1944 and then wounded and captured at St. Vith by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge six weeks later. He spent the next 4 months as a prisoner of war in prison camps and being force-marched around Germany by the German army. He was liberated on April 16, 1944 by Allied forces

Rogers, Eugene N. "Buck"  machine gun operator    01/15/2018 FLhe entered the Army and was a Paratrooper in WWII from 1943-1946. He chose to attend Paratrooper training and was assigned to the 325th Glider Infantry regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. Before deciding on paratrooper training he was assigned as a machine gun operator in the 106th infantry division. He credited this decision for saving his life, as the 106th was overrun in the opening days of the Battle of the Bulge and most all the 106th troops were killed or captured. After the war, he was a part of the occupation force in Berlin, Germany and sailed back to the U.W. on the Queen Mary. He marched in the Victory parade in NYC on Jan. 12th 1946, walking down 5th Avenue.

  1. Silver Star for gallantry in action from 12/17/1944 to 12/18/1944 in Belgium and Germany. Separated from their parent unit by rapidly advancing hostile forces, Pfc Roper, an officer and 20 men, despite their lack of food and adequate clothing, resolved to infiltrate through the enemy lines to the American lines. For 2 days and nights, Rope preceded the group and repeatedly averted detection by the enemy. In the absence of the officer, Roper assumed command and directed the group's fire until he was wounded and evacuated.
  2. Cpl. Willard Roper, Havre, Mont., led the group back as first scout. After 72 hours of clawing through enemy patrols, tank and machine gun positions, the exhausted and footsore men, some of whom had lost their helmets, could still grin and fight.

Ruffo, Valentine34 052 819Cpl 422 INF/D
I am COL (R) Val Ruffo, son of the late CPL Valentine Ruffo. I'm trying to figure out what unit my father was assigned to before and during the Ardennes Campaign. Based on his discharge record, he departed CONUS on 11 FEB 1944 and arrived in the ETO on 24 FEB 1944. A search of units arriving in England at that time indicates that 30 INF was the main unit. So, I'm hoping you might have him listed in your personnel roles for the Division. He entered service at Camp Blanding, Florida and was most probably sent to Camp Bragg, NC for his artillery training according to the Camp Blanding Historian since that was the artillery training center for the East Coast. He was a Light Artillery Gun Crewman (844), which I assume was an anti-tank gun, service number 34 052 819. Sometime, probably in the Spring of 1945 he was transferred to D Co, 422 INF Rgt from the 106th INF Div, that also trained at Camp Atterbury. This Regiment was reconstituted around this time after it had been lost during the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged from this unit 1 Oct 1945 at Ft Dix, NJ.
