Under pressure of the initial thrust that signaled the German Ardennes attack, his battery was forced to withdraw, abandoning its guns and equipment. That night, SSgt Fielder with one remaining officer, rallied the men, and despite intense enemy machine gun fire, recovered all of the unit's guns and trucks. When the 1st Sgt became a casualty, he assumed his duties, integrated new men nto the battery and aided in swiftly rebuilding it into an excellent fighting machine, which, in the gruelling action at St. Vith and Manhay, Belgium, inflicted serous losses on the enemy. John P. Filipiak, 24, of 637 High Street, according to word received by his wife from the war department.

The communication said the coast artillery truck was demolished when it struck a mine which had been laid to protect the area and that Filipiak and his crew were killed in the explosion. First word from the government, Nov. 5 indicated that he had died in a hospital.

Since learning of his death, Mrs Filipiak has received a letter from him dated Oct. 13, one week before the accident. "I am well and happy, and longing for the war to end so I can come home to you and see out baby girl" he wrote. The corporal was sent overseas from Iceland and never saw his daughter, Linda Marie, 14 months old.

Pfc Fischer and Pfc Spencer immediately manned the vehicle's machine gun while a third soldier ran back to warn the approaching convoy. He served in France, Scotland, England, Belgium, Germany and the European Theater. On Dec. 16 1944, he lost his entire squad in a battle with Germany. Bob surrendered and was taken as a Prisoner of War. He found it hard to talk about his journey and story for many years. The things he saw and lived were beyond words. He always said he made it with bravery and endurance but knew that the grace of God and his strong faith is what carried him through. Bob was so proud of his service to his country.    27, 59, FAG 170258063
