When his platoon was pinned down by severe hostile automatic weapons fire, he exhibited great courage, by voluntarily moving forward into the intense fire. 1. Mr. Carro served with the US Army in the European Theater with the Cavalry Unit of the 106th Division. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war in Germany from December, 1944 to spring, 1945.
2. What remains behind is his legacy as a Prisoner of War and member of one of this country's most respected war-time military units—the 106th "Golden Lion" Division of the U.S. Army. The 106th was well-known to be the hardest hit division of the infamous Battle of the Bulge, and was the inspiration for author (and unit member) Kurt Vonnegut's early novels, including Slaughterhouse Five. Activated in March 1943, the 106th arrived in the United Kingdom in November 1944 and quickly moved to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) after brief training. After relieving the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division, the unit settled into the quiet area of Schnee Eifel ("Snow Mountain") on Dec. 11, 1944, for what it thought would be additional training. A little known fact: the 106th was the first division with 18-year-old draftees. The average age for the unit was 22 years old and they had only been in the ETO for slightly more than two weeks. They were the newest formation in Europe. Ironically, the 106th was sent to the Ardennes specifically to get its first taste of combat in what was supposed to be a "quiet" sector. It took up 21 miles of front along the Schnee Eifel; normal space for a division on defense was only five miles. Without warning on Dec. 16, the German Ardennes Offensive—what we have come to call the Battle of the Bulge—began, encircling the 106th's 422d and 423d regiments and cutting them off from the remainder of the division. Despite regrouping and mounting a valiant counterattack, the division lost more than 600 men; more than 1,200 were wounded and more than 7,000 soldiers were captured and sent to various POW camps throughout Germany. One of those GIs was Joe, at 30 years old, one of the oldest men in his unit. While the rest of the 106th division withdrew, attached itself to the U.S. 7th Armored Division, and eventually returned to the struggle, Joe Carro and his fellow POWs, endured the remainder of the war in German camps. After the war, Joseph came back to New Jersey and, like millions of other veterans, picked up where he left off.

Mr. Carroll was a World War II Army veteran, whose service in the 106th Infantry Division, in Europe, included a harrowing experience during the Battle of the Bulge, the German army's last major offensive of the war, which took place in the Ardennes Forest region of Belgium and Germany. On December 19, 1944, his unit was fighting near Schonberg, when Mr. Carroll, then 19, was wounded and taken prisoner. On Christmas Eve, he arrived at the German prison camp, where he was held until the camp was liberated in May 1945. He received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and other medals for his war service.

When the snow-covered route, vital for supply and reinforcement was blocked by mines on and near a bridge, 2LT Carver and an enlisted man (Pfc LaFleur) volunteered to clear the mines. The enemy was constantly bombarding the area with artillery and mortar fire. Undaunted, and unaided by mine detectors, they removed 27 mines, clearing the urgently needed road. GO 1945-039,

Defying small arms fire, he determined the location of the enemy and eliminated them.
