4. He had a distinguished army career becoming the 5th Sargent Major of the Army, the highest ranking enlisted member of the army. He died in 2008.

7. He took basic training at Camp Wallace, near Galveston, TX and then volunteered to be a cadet in the Army Air Corps. He took flying lessons at the University of North Dakota and pre-flight Training at Santa Ana, CA, but in March 1944 as the Allied forces prepared for the Invasion of Europe, he was one of 35,000 cadets transferred to ground duty. Bainbridge wound up in Company A, 1st Battalion, 423rd Infantry Regiment, 106th Division, in April 1944. As a Sergeant Squad Leader, Bainbridge was captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He was interned at Stalag 9B Bad Orb, and Stalag 9A in Siegenheim until liberated on Good Friday 1945. Bainbridge went into Bad Orb at 140 Ibs. and came out weighing only 89 Ibs. Discharge in December 1945. In June 1951, he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. Deciding to remain in the Army, Sgt. Major Bainbridge rose quickly in rank. He was promoted to Sergeant Major in February 1963. As Sgt. Major of the 1st Battalion 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division at Fr. Riley KS, Bainbridge accompanied his unit to Vietnam in October 1965. In 1966 he became the Sgt. Major of II Field Forces, Vietnam. After Vietnam Sgt. Major Bainbridge was assigned to Fort Benning, GA. Then in 1967 he became First U.S. Army Sgt. Major at Ft. Meade, MD. In 1968 he went to Hawaii to be the Sgt. Major of the U.S. Army, Pacific. In 1972 he was reassigned to Ft. Bliss, TX, where he became the first Sergeant Major of the newly created U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy, the capstone school of the Armys noncommissioned officer education system. In 1975 Bainbridge was selected to the fifth Sergeant Major of the Army. During the interview process before his selection, Bainbridge was asked why he hadn't obtained more then one year of college. "Ive got a doctoratein Soldiering", he replied, "and I think thats important." General Fred Weyand, Chief of Staff of the Army, picked him for the job. As Sgt. Major of the Army, Bainbridge was the chief enlisted advisor to the Armys Chief of Staff. He held that job for four years, serving under first General Weyand and later General Bernard Rogers. At the time the SMAs tour at the Pentagon ran concurrently with the tour of the Chief of Staff who had selected him. Bainbridge was the first to break the mold. Bainbridge retired in July 1979 after thirty-one years of Army services.

   He received three Legion of Merit,Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
   Among other nations which honored General Baker are Korea,Belgium,Greece,France and Germany.Died on active duty as Major General.

2. What a remarkable one we are fortunate enough to have in Walter Bandurak, Med. Det, 81st Engr Bn. He underwent a very serious operation on 25 January in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa. for replacement of diseased aortic valve with a ball valve and has made a real recovery. On April 28 he wrote me that after his six week checkup on 8 March, the surgeon gave him permission to drive his personal automobile and to return to their third floor apartment in Greensburg, Pa. So he and Lillian did on 19 March. The doctors released him to go back to his State job full time on Monday 2 May

He braved the devastating hail of fire to move along his platoon's position and direct fire. By repeatedly emptying a rifle from an exposed position, he provided targets for his men. Inspired by his actions the platoon maintained an unyielding line. Killed by small arms fire while attempting to contact his encircled company command post.
2. Lt. Albert Barnaby, of Metamora, Ohio, had his platoon dug in on a knoll overlooking the Siegfried Line when it was jumped by two battalions and five tanks. There was only one bazooka and a machine gun in the platoon to answer the tanks and a battery of 88’s and, as the attack continued, Barnaby’s ammunition got dangerously low. To control his fire, he deliberately exposed himself to give the machine gun selected targets. Out­numbered thirty to one, the platoon held its ground for eight hours until reinforcements arrived. Barnaby then tried to make contact with the surrounded company command post. Instead of sending an enlisted man, he went himself. He never returned.

He was in a US Army Hospital in Germany until the end of 1945, when he was sent back to the USA, arriving home in Long Beach, California in early 1946 after a plane ride from Germany to London, and then a ship ride (vessel unknown) to New York, and a cross-country train ride home. A letter from the intelligence section of the Army states that he was no longer being considered to transfer into that section in late 1945. He lived for another 30 years, finally passing in 1975 from complications of cirrhosis of the liver due to the usual reason. He woke up many nights of his life screaming from his POW experiences. He was an honorable man ran a successful engineering firm, who stayed married to his wife until he died and raised two good citizen children, a boy and a girl. We have looked at the Atterbury Album and we believe he is on the page with the 424 AT company, middle photo, second row from the front, far right.

When the shortage of able-bodied men to fight in the war became dire, his program was cancelled and he was sent to France and served as a combat infantryman with the 106th Division. Amidst brutally frozen conditions in France's Ardennes Forest in December of 1944, his rifle company was overwhelmed by advancing German tank forces and he was captured during the Battle of the Bulge. Forced by the Germans to march for days through snow and ice, he suffered severe frostbite. He was then held as a prisoner of war in Germany's Bad Orb Prison Camp from January 1945 until he was liberated by General Patton's tank forces on Easter Sunday, April 1945. Nearly dying of starvation during captivity, he weighed only 106 pounds when finally liberated. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during his capture.
