  4. In Europe, their destination was in an area in the Ardennes, near St Vith and the city of Schoenberg, along the German/Belgium border. The battle started December 16, 1944, and has since become known as The Battle of the Bulge. Fortunately, Walter was not killed, but the Company ran out of ammunition, food, and radio connections. They were surrounded by the Germans and had to surrender. Walter became a prisoner of war. After arriving at prison camp 4B in Germany, he and other prisoners were selected to work illegally in a German benzene factory making synthetic gasoline for the German armored units.
Walter was a prisoner of war for a total of 4 1/2 months. He was liberated in a half-starved condition by an advanced guard of the oncoming Allied armies in April 1945. He had jaundice and blood poisoning in his right leg caused by untreated shrapnel wound. Back in the States, he was given an Honorable Discharge at Fort Oglethorpe.

  2. he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater and was captured in the Battle of the Bulge on December 21, 1944. 2. he wrote as a prisoner in 4B and later on a work party in Zeitz, 122 typed pages of his book’s rough draft (includes incredible detail down to the hour in many cases of what happened from the time they arrived in Belgium to the time he was liberated). He actually escaped for a few days, as his group was being moved away from the American advance toward Zeitz. He was hid in a German basement for two days before the 6th Armored Div arrived. See it under 106th Diaries.
  3. One other thing I have that I would think is pretty rare is three pictures of my grandfather and a few other prisoners when they were in Zeitz. He gave a German woman cigarettes to take the pictures and develop them and he wrote the address on the back (4 Lindenplatz, Zeitz).
  4. he was captured on the 21th in the 422nd Regimental motor pool.

  1. Along with many other captured Americans, Roy was transported by rail to Stalag IV-B, at Mühlberg, located between Leipzig and Dresden. Having suffered frozen feet, Roy was placed in the camp’s Lazarett (hospital). The Red Army’s western advance in early 1945 forced the Germans to evacuate POWs, and the Lazarett was moved several times, first to Leipzig, then to the city of Halle. Roy was at a location in Halle when advancing American troops arrived in April. After liberation he spent time at the central American POW repatriation facility in Le Havre, France before returning to the USA.
  2. 422d Infantry Regiment Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes Alsace.
  3. A veteran of World War II, Roy served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then in the Company F, 422nd Infantry Division in England, France, and Belgium. He participated in the Battles of the Bulge and Rhineland and was taken prisoner in Germany at Christmas of 1944 and remained in Stalag 4B prison camp until April of 1945. Roy received the Purple Heart, two bronze battle stars and the POW medal.

  1. Silver Star for gallantry in action on 12/17/1944 in Germany. Pfc Arvanis, mortar Gunner, and his two assistants, remained steadfast despite the overwhelming odds, ignoring the deadly small arms fire. He fired the mortar earlier damaged by holding it between his legs and grasping with both hands. Eight of the attacking Germans were killed. As the remaining Germans charged the emplacements, he grabbed his pistol, shot two, and knocked down a third by throwing his pistol at him. GO 1945-038.
  2. “I used to go out by myself through the German minefields to check the position of their tanks and artillery and report back to my CO so he could tell what I found out to the battalion commander,” Arvanis related. “I got to where I was going out every evening. I always carried a knife because guns made too much noise. If I had to kill a man, I'd get some of his clothing so I could wear it. I was able to speak a little German and would sneak into their chowlines. I can remember leaning back against a half‑track or tank and soaking up all I could from their conversations while eating their potatoes and sauerkraut. “It got to the point that some of their cooks probably knew my face,” Arvanis went on. “I didn't like their kraut at first, but after I got used to it the stuff tasted OK. “Then I'd sneak back to our lines,” he said, “and tell the Old Man all about it.
  3. newspaper article of his part in the "Glorious Collapse of the 106th"
  4. Four krauts closed in with bayonets. He stopped three with his service pistol. Now the last one was lunging at him. Arvannis threw his four-pound revolver at the German, hit him squarely between the eyes and killed him.
