THE GENERAL IS LAID TO REST
Thirty representatives of the 106th Division Association were present in Washington to pay their last respects to their fallen General.General Alan W. Jones was given the most dignified and complete burial service those persons present had ever seen. His respect was exceeded only by the difference in Gun salutes received by former President John F. Kennedy. The services were held in the old New England chapel at Fort Myers, Arlington, Virginia, just adjacent to Arlington Cemetery. The General's body was born on a gun carriage pulled by the six dappled greys to the entrance to the Chapel. His flag and the flag of our Country were placed at the entrance to the Chapel. After the drum roll the Band played their respect and when the tune of Nearer my God to Thee echoed into the Chapel there were very few dry eyes. At precisely 2:00 P.M. as scheduled the General's body was brought into the Chapel. The service was conducted by a Chaplain who from all indications was an old and dear friend of the General and his family. After the service the body was again placed on the gun carriage for the march to the grave site. The Honorary pall bearers marched behind the carriage as well as Black Jack, the riderless horse, also used for President Kennedy. The 106th was honored by having General Leo T. McMahon as an Honorary pall bearer. He was selected by General Jones himself when he knew the end was near. In fact he planned everything down to the last detail. Words cannot describe the beauty of the day, the solemnity of the procession, the precision of the Honor Guard on the march to the grave site. If the General could have seen it he would have been proud. He was concerned that the Firing Squad be "Neat". They were, it was as though one shot were fired. The General was given a 13 gun salute from the Battery at the Fort, together with three volleys by the Firing Squad.
For anyone who saw the color detail of President Kennedy's service you can visualize what happened at Arlington Cemetery this past Monday when our General was laid to rest. We all pray that his family will continue in good health and be strong in the Faith. We all mourn the General but live on knowing that he had an abiding Faith in his Master and we should emulate General Jones generosity, his Love of Family, his love and respect for the 106th and last of all, his Humility, not only before man but before God. There should be no further tears shed for him as he would not want this but have us go forth to a better society, a better 106th Division Association and above all, better relationships between ourselves, as families and friends. May each of us, when our trials and tribulations are over meet our Maker and have him say of us, "Well done, my good and faithful Servant".
EDITOR'S NOTE: In the few short years, I was privileged to personally know General Alan W. Jones, I found him a person with whom I felt at ease to be with, very sincere and honest. He was a man for whom I held admiration, affection and a great deal of respect. He always had a warm smile, a soft laugh, a good word and an understanding nod.
Because he was a General did not by itself gain him the host of friends that was his. These other tremendous qualities are what we'll all remember, and live on.
So you see -- he is not really gone.
His kind never are!

THE OLD MAN
The term "Old Man" is used affectionately by GI's to refer to their Commanding Officer. Some really think he's an S.O.B., some look on him with affection, some couldn't care less and wouldn't even recognize his name. The Brown Nosers think he's the greatest, the slogging Infantryman thinks he's to blame for all his problems even blaming him if it rains or snows. The "Old Man" has a thankless job. He has to make decisions from day to day. In combat he has to weigh how many men he feels he might be sending to his death and what the odds on survival will be. He is alone many, many times, arguing with himself and having to live with himself. He hopes all his decisions are the right ones. Being human and serving under Almighty God he cannot take God's place and therefore he makes mistakes. As a GI who served under "Old Man" Alan W. Jones, I can say I blamed him for many things. When we were over run outside of Radscheid in Germany I wondered why he didn't have a better plan for my survival and that of my buddies that I saw cut to ribbons. While I suffered through the filth and degradation of Prison Camp life, I wondered how the General felt; snug back in free territory enjoying his square meals, having people wait on him hand and foot. I thought I suffered; oh how he must have been suffering inside. When I returned, still in one piece, to join my family and friends, I joined the 106th Division Association so that I could return to City after City, hoping to see some of my buddies who also survived the ordeal. When finally at a Convention, one of the boys said to me, "Hey, there's General Jones, let's go see him". I said, "To hell with General Jones, if he wants to see me he knows where to find me, why should I run to him after all I suffered from his doing". It takes some people longer than others to not only grow up but to search out the Truth. I read every book and/or document on the Battle of the Bulge trying desperately to find out what happened to the 106th, me, and the General. I determined I did the best I could under the circumstances, the 106th did the best it could under the same circumstances. I also found, though I probably didn't want to find out, that General Jones had done the best not only that he could have done but that ANYONE could have done. The next Convention I sought out General Jones (even though I am sure he knew where to find me as previous) and shook his hand and this started a close friendship full of the utmost mutual respect that any two persons could have for one another. I found out how human he was and that he really was human all the time. He didn't cuss me out when I was struggling in the mud and the snow of the Ardennes. He didn't wish me ill luck nor bring the rain or snow on my head. He was not responsible for any of my misfortunes. If we would only cease to blame someone else for our misfortune and realize it is us who causes our own misfortune.
General Jones has proven above and beyond the call of duty that he is devoted to the 106th and its membership. We shall all miss him in the days to come. When I last spoke to him while he was in the Hospital he was very courageous and his thoughts and plans were for the 106th. When he said in a halting voice, "Doug, this damn cancer is getting me down" neither one of us could contain our emotions.
He's gone now but he will ever live in my heart and the hearts of the 106th Division Association.

Along with countless others, I have not been back to visit Europe since my "all-expenses paid" tour of nearly a quarter century ago. From then until now, because of some graduate study, rearing a family and repaying my personal war debt, my travels and those of my family have been principally those within our own country with an occasional jaunt into Eastern Canada. This year, however, K and I are looking forward to being in St. Vith and some of those other places to be seen now under far different circumstances from those of yesteryear. No doubt we shall be amazed at the changes we see there, but in all likelihood they will not be as startling to us as changes here would be to tourists from other countries returning to our land after so long a time.
So we pose a few questions. Do I have a part in the changes taking place or am I an unconcerned observer? To what extent shall I participate in the social, economic and religious happenings about
4
me? What is my responsibility in these areas of change to oppose, compromise, advocate, advise and counsel? Should my efforts be directed so as to aid in bringing hope, justice, brotherhood, love to all men? The questions are asked; dare I not answer and carry through? "Thus says the Lord of hosts, render true judgments, show kindness and mercy each to his brother, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart." - Zechariah 7: 9, 10

BAG LUNCH

9 Jan. 1969
The distinguished writer of this column, affectionately known over the years to Golden Lions, their ladies and families as, THE OLD MAN, is ill in Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. The undersigned phoned him today. In the course of the conversation AWJ mentioned that he had received notice from John Fritz, CUB Editor, to have all copy in by Jan. 20 for publication 1 February. He said he could not do the column this month and doubted that he would ever be able to do it in the future. He asked me to take it over. This association has been his pride and joy. It has received his devotion and dedication since the first reunion in Indianapolis in 1947. He started this column after the second Chicago Convention and in each succeeding issue we have read with interest and benefit his advice to the organization and his amusing and sparkling comments on current events.23 Jan. 1969.
We have just received word that General Jones passed away early yesterday morning at Walter Reed Army Hospital. This is certainly sad news to all Golden Lions, their wives and families who have enjoyed the Annual Reunion with Al & Alys Jones. On behalf of all of them we extend deepest sympathy to Alys Jones, her son Col. Alan W. Jones, Jr., a member of the association and her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Vom Orde.

NOW AND THEN.
1969 - 1944-45
Doug Coffey, COGL, former President, permanent and efficient Memorial Chairman led a small delegation from the Association back to Belgium in December 1954 to participate in the 10th anniversary of the Battle of the Ardennes (Bulge). Now Doug has signed up a much larger delegation of Golden Lions, wives and children to accompany him back to Belgium in July to commemorate the 25th. anniversary of the Battle. Of course it is a few months earlier than the actual date, 16 December 1969, but the group can get about in pleasant weather to revisit the places where the veterans fought 25 years ago. Those who fought there won't need any directions. They will know where they want to go and what they want to see.
However we have members of the Association who did not join the Division until after the Battle of the Ardennes. They might like to be reminded of what the Division was doing in the spring and summer of 1945.
The 106th. Infantry Division's combat role had ended in victory on 7 March just seven miles northeast of the original left-flank Schnee Eifel positions
5
of the 422. Infantry on 16 December 1944. On 14 March the Division moved out of the battle zone, travelled by rail and motor, to St. Quentin, France for reorganization, rehabilitation and training. It had to reconstitute and train new organizations for 422 Inf., 423. Inf, 589th. and 590th FA Bns. and for 106th. Reconnaissance Troop. Two new combat teams just arrived from the-US were attached, the 3d. Inf Regt and 159th. Inf Regts; the 401st F.A. Bns and 627th. F.A. Bns. We also received 6,606 officers and men as replacements. On 15 April, in solemn ceremonies the 422d and 423d. Inf. Regts, the 589th. and 590th. FA Bns and the 106th Reconn Tr. were reborn; receiving their respective colors, standards and guidons.
The next day the Division received others for its new assignment - Germany and the POWs. Leaving the reconstituted units attached to the 66th. Division containing the Germans in the St. Malkin pocket, the revamped 106th. moved to the Rhine. By 25 April all elements had closed in. Meanwhile the reconstituted units in the west had seen some action. The 627th. F.A. Bn. (Lt. Col. Harris) supported the 66th. Division Artillery from positions southwest of Nantes while the 423d. Inf. supported by the 590th. FA Bn. clashed with the Germans in the St. Nazaire pocket the day before the Germans surrendered.
While the Division was handling more than 900,000 German POWs, the reconstituted units moved up from Brittany by motor following the surrender of the Germans there and closed in at Naohtsheim, 10 miles west of Mayen, Germany by 27 May to continue training under Division control. The Asst. Div. Comdr. General Perrin and his staff and Lt. Col. Hagman, Divarty, moved in to supervise. The training area was christened Camp Alan W. Jones, in honor of the first Division commander. The recreational center at Eupen, Belgium was taken over by the 106th. and named "Withee Recreational Center" in honor of T/5 Edward S. Withee, Co. A, 81st. Engr. Bn. awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action around AUW, Belgium during the fighting in the Bulge. Later the Namur Recreation Center was taken over by the Golden Lions and christened "Martin Recreation Center" in honor of Lt. Albert Martin, Divarty, killed in action near Sart. Les St. Vith on 18 December.
On 12 July the Division was relieved of Prisoner of War duty and took over occupation of the Bruchsal-Karlsruhe Landkreise where they remained until jig 1 Sept. when orders to return to US W. arrived.

ST. VITH 1969
The time of departure is getting closer and closer. The excitement of returning to St. Vith for the 1969 Convention is growing and growing. All information relating to Passports, Health Inoculations, What clothes to wear and the like has gone out to all those signed up for St. Vith.
We have 94 persons signed up at this time, and creating a waiting list for those who had failed previously to make up their minds. We regret the loss of General Jones as many things had been planned around his presence in St. Vith. We will do our utmost to make him proud of the 106th in St. Vith and will do him Honors there.
If anyone has any question about the re-union in St. Vith in 1969 write to Doug Coffey, Town Hall, West Orange, New Jersey, 07052. He will cooperate in any way.

Marcus, Gilbert; 423rd Inf. 4800 Chicago Beach Drive - Apt 312 5, Chicago, Illinois 60615; has an idea that he would like to pass on to the membership for their consideration; with the passing of time and all of us growing a little older each year it seems to me it would be prudent to start thinking of a "Life Time" membership fee to the organization. By investing a sum of money in excellent securities we might be able to perpetuate ourselves in that manner. I think that it is an idea well worth looking into by some member who is in the actuarial business as that we might get a professional opinion. Incidentally, I am not in any way connected with a financial institution; I merely thought that I might make the suggestion. Gil, if there are any suggestions to your plan we will notify you.

FROM AL AND SOPHIE MILLER
The Illinois 106th group held their December 16th dinner at Shangrila-Lil's in Chicago with 22 present, writes Sophie Miller. The group had a ball she states. They also made a phone, call to the Loveless's; who also were

having a 106th dinner that night. On November 12th the Shaw's from Texas were up to visit us; Jack and Kay Schellser, The Shaws and The Millers had a very enjoyable evening reminiscing.
NEWS FROM FLORIDA
Fred William, Route 2, Box 82; Grand Ridge, Florida pens the following; I wish to commend Bill Smith for his part in a well-planned reunion. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Shortly after our return from the reunion, we were visited by a member of the old D-Company 423rd. Some of the fellows might remember him; Eddie Peckham, Buff Capp Road, Tolland, Conn. He was a member of the second platoon. In September, while I was in Indiana on business, Joe Litvin of D-company 423rd, called as he and his wife were making a tour of Florida. He inquired about the reunion and said he was sorry to have missed it. Holiday greetings to all."SYMPATHIES EXTENDED" 40 Indian Rd.
Port Chester, New York Dear Mr. Scranton:
This is to notify you that my dear husband, Lt. Col. Martin M. Dolitsky, passed away on August 21, 1968, from a heart attack. Marty had been supply officer of the 591st F A Bn. After the war ended, he went back to the New York National Guard and became Battalion Commander of the 105th F A Bn of the 42nd Infantry Division. He served until 1960, when R 0 P A got him and he retired from the Guard; after being awarded the New York State Medal for over 33 year's service by the Secretary of the Army.
We have two sons, Philip, who is in his last year of college in Texas and Michael, who is home with me and a freshman in high school. We had just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary recently.
Marty had been looking forward to going to St. Vith, Belgium next summer and being with his old buddies.
I would appreciate receiving issues of the Cub as they come out.
Sincerely
Libby Dolitsky

It was most interesting and I am sure our members who were unable to attend the reunion enjoyed reading the highlights.
