  1. Bronze Star for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy 12/17/1944 in Germany. When his company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy and was ordered to withdraw, he methodically destroyed all records of value to the enemy. Because of the darkness, lack of communications and intermingling of the enemy with his own men,it was necessary to collect the company by personally contacting each man. Despite heavy artillery and mortar fire and constant danger from enemy patrols, he voluntarily went from post to post and gathered together and led over fifty men safely through the enemy infested area to the battalion assembly point.
  2. Purple Heart 12/27/1944

  1. Silver Star (as Pfc) for gallantry in action 01/13/1945 in Belgium. When his platoon was pinned down by a concealed machine gun, he detected the enemy's position, and ignoring his personal safety crawled over exposed ground towards the gun. Ten yards from the emplacement, and despite the intense fire directed at him, he rose, firing his rifle and charged the gun, wounding two of the crew, capturing three others, and silencing the weapon.
  2. When his platoon of Co. K, 424th, was pinned down by fire from an emplaced machine gun, S/Sgt. (then Pfc) George S. Vasquez, St. Paul, Minn., located the gun, went forward with his M-1 and wiped out the Nazi position single-handed.
