died in a German prison camp April 8, 1945.
  1. Combat Infantry Badge (Prisoner of War) 12/16/1944 GO 1945-051.
  2. Pfc. Clarence F. Lahr, nineteen, son of Mrs. Catherine Dagen, 734 E. Fulton St. and J. Fred Lahr, Millersville, died in a German prison camp April 8, 1945. He entered the service Dec. 8, 1943, and went overseas with an infantry unit in October, 1944. He was captured in December of that year.
  3. Clarence Lahr was in Co. B, 423rd infantry of the 106th Infantry Division near Bleialf, Belgium when the Battle of the Bulge began on December 16, 1944. He was probably captured on December 19 when most of his company was surrounded. The prisoners were marched to Gorelstein and then transported by train to Stalag IXB in Bad Orb, Germany. While in Stalag IXB, Clarence was befriended by John Reifenrath, another private in Company B who remembers helping to teach Clarence to read* and writing letters for him. Stalag IXB had a reputation as one of the worse camps for POW's, and of being used to house "troublemakers" and other undesirable prisoners, including many Jewish soldiers.

On February 8, 1945, 350 prisoners from Bad Orb were selected and transported by train to a work camp at Berga, on the Elster River. There, they and prisoners from Buchenwald were used as slave labor digging tunnels that to be used for an underground refinery. Conditions were worse even than those at Stalag IXB, with the prisoners being worked to death.

As the Allied armies advanced, the remaining prisoners, including Clarence, were forced to march from the camp on April 5, 1945. After 2 days on the march, Clarence Lahr died on April 8, 1945, and was reportedly buried along with two others in the small village of Gefell, Germany. When the survivors were liberated on April 23, only 169 American POW's in the column that left Berga remained with the group.

Sources: "The Lost Soldiers of Stalag IX-B,"by Roger Cohen, in The New York Times, February 27, 2005; "An American Slave in Nazi Germany, My story of combat, capture, and slave labor," John W. Reifenrath.

*Clarence apparently suffered a form of dyslexia in which he could not sound out words phonetically. Today, we would say that he is a "whole language" reader.

Laramee, Paul Edward Sgt 81 ENG (C) Distinguished Unit Citation, BS 11/04/2012 FLAs an engineer, and French interrupter for the Army, SGT Laramée was a member of the 81st Engineer Combat Battalion, 106th Infantry Division which participated in the famous Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. While two regiments of the 106th INF DIV became encircled at Schnberg, SGT Laramée and his unit pulled back under fire to form a five-day holding action on a ridge line at St. Vith, against vastly superior German forces. For this heroic stand, the 81st ENGR (C) was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for Gallantry and SGT Laramée was awarded the Bronze Star.  Laramee-PaulE.jpg www.dyer-lakefuneralhome.com/obituary/5548813m Wayne Dunn 09/16/2019

  • Purple Heart 01/16/1945 in Belgium.
  • Silver Star (as 2LT) for gallantry in action 12/25/1944 in Belgium. Leading a platoon in a company attack on Manhay, Belgium, he participated in a flanking movement against the enemy which caused them to concentrate tank and machine gun fire on his platoon. Completely exposed and heedless of his own safety, he ran from position to position, directing fire and when an enemy tank approached within fifty yards, he personally directed fire from a grenade launcher, killing one of its occupants and forcing the tank to retire. He then administrated first aid, and with another officer made reconnaissance, remained in the town, and observed the enemy withdrawal.

With utter disregard for his own personal safety, unhesitatingly rushed to the assistance of another soldier whose arms and clothes were ablaze as the result of a gasoline explosion. By quick thinking and good judgement he removed part of his won clothing with which he extinguished the blaze, thus preventing possible fatal burns or permanent disability. The heroic and courageous actions of Cpl Leishman reflect credit on himself and the military services.

The uniform he wore home has the Golden Lion on it, 106th Division, 422nd Infantry, Company K. He returned home 09/09/45 on the Marechal Joffre and I have copies of the on board ship news. My aunt says he was assigned to stay and maintain German prisoners of war after V-E day until that Sept.

My best guess is he was one of those soldiers that lost most of their original company on D-Day and he was transferred or 'joined' with another group and then was transferred to the 106th sometime before the awful Ardennes Christmas. I do not think he was taken prisoner when the 422nd was or at least he never mentioned it to any of us. I assume from that he may have been driving back or forth along the supply route and again ended up with some other group (424th) possibly?

His Tank Half Track needed a new throw-out bearing and just a day earlier he left to have it fixed. Instead of counting his blessings for being out of the battle he grabbed a load of ammunition to take to his buddies. He was turned around by mortars and small arms fire and returned to St Vith which, ultimately, kept him from becoming a POW. Today (2015) Earl is 93 years old and lives in Tucson, AZ.”

  2. Some of you know me as a professional lobbyist and indeed I have been one for thirty-two years. However, few know of my personal experience with the Holocaust in Germany during World War II. When the war came, I was eager to be in it, and in fact, enlisted and volunteered for infantry. In due course I found myself a casualty during the Battle of The Bulge. I became a Prisoner Of War. I will not attempt to describe those combat conditions in December of 1944, the "Ardennes Snow March," four days and nights jammed into box cars with no food or water (and being bombed by your own Air Force in the process). Suffice it to say, I, along with several thousand other GI's, found myself entering the gates of Stalag IX-B, Bad Orb, Germany, on December 26.
  3. Stalag IX-B was a very primitive camp, housing several thousand Russian, Serbian, and French soldiers. It was reserved for Privates and Privates- First Class only. In the American compound there were no American officers, except a Protestant, a Catholic Chaplain, and a Dentist. There were no medical facilities, no sanitary services, no heat, and not much grass soup. Men died every day.
  4. You may wonder how the Nazis identified the Jewish GI's. The answer is that they volunteered such fact. Frankly, it is something that I never understood to this day. Was it done as an affirmation of their culture and religion? Was it done out of naiveté? Was it done out of a false sense that because they were American soldiers, ... that it would protect them? After forty-six years I still do not know. What I do know is that it happened. Demonstrating once again the enormous capacity of some to impose the cruelest of punishment on others, solely because of difference of race, religion, nationality, or culture.
  5. Those Jewish GI's in Stalag IX-B may have thought they would be exempt from the Nazi Holocaust. They were not, and their fate should never be forgotten.

  1. Isaac Lucero wrote from New Mexico. He reminded me that he used to be called “Half Pint” in the 106th. I remember Isaac very well. He was a good soldier, though he was so short that the butt of a BAR would nearly drag the ground when he carried it. “First I was a BAR man and then I was a scout,” he said in his letter. “I was the only Spanish guy in the outfit.”

While engaged in "D" Exercises, 106th Division, he supervised the laying of wire through adverse weather conditions. Wire was serviced and communications were maintained. When he discovered other wires were being cut by heavy traffic, in the cover of darkness, he strung wire overhead at both stream crossings. 1. Edwin completed basic training at Camp Roberts, CA, and then spent time in the Army Specialized Training Program (ATSP) in Cincinnati, OH. When this program was disbanded, Edwin was sent to the 106th Infantry Division, made a mail clerk, and assigned to Headquarters Company of the 422rd Regiment. Edwin spent the next 106 days as a POW in Germany, at camps in Bad Orb and Ziegenheim, Germany. Conditions steadily worsened, and hunger and neglect claimed lives. Edwin was finally liberated when advancing US troops overran Ziegenheim on 30 March 1945. He was moved to a field evacuation hospital, then in early May 1945 shipped to the US; he spent the time until his discharge in December 1945 at several stateside medical facilities.
