  1. I am conducting research in support of my book on the events around 20 December 1944, the murder of Murray Zappler and Kurt Jacobs. These 2 men were members of the IPW team 154, and came from Camp Ritchie MD. I am trying to find out the ultimate status of the remainder of this team, I believe they would have come from HQ, 106 ID.

  7. On or about 20 December 1944 in the neighborhood of BLEIALF, Germany (GSGS 4042, Sheet 6, Coordinates P-98) between six and seven hundred American soldiers of the 106th Infantry Division were captured by the 2nd Battalion, 293rd Volks Grenadier Regiment, 18th Volks Grenadier Division; Hauptmann Curt BRUNS was in command. Among the Americans were two German speaking enlisted men apparently of German Jewish descent and who were members of I. P. W. Team 154. BRUNS made the statement that there was no room in Germany for Jews and they were taken down the road and shot. The bodies were recovered on 13 February 1945 and identified as being S/SGT Kurt R. JACOBS and T/5 Murray ZAPLER.
  8. Interrogated German POWs. When the 423rd was over-run, he became a German POW. Former Germans that he had interrogated told what he did and he was executed by the Germans. Along with Murray Zappler, 423rd.

  2. Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942, training at Camp Hood, Texas. In 1944 he was assigned to the Golden Lion 106th Infantry Division. He qualified as expert with the Carbine M-1 Cal.30 and marksman with rifle. By 1943, he had attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Jennings was among the infantry in the 422nd Regiment who were cut off and surrounded by German troops in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Offensive). Without ammunition and food, the 422nd and 423rd regiments inside German lines delayed the Germans in the early stages of the battle from exploding in a complete German victory.

Jack was among the 4,700 infantry captured during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Prisoner of War in the Nazi Camp Stalag IX-B, also known as Bad Orb, and at Ziegenhein. POW camps were charged with inhumane treatment; many slowly starved to death. By the time Allied forces reached the camp, its captives were too weak to greet their liberators. Jack was starving and his feet were frozen when he was liberated on March 30, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

  1. We already had two good cooks, a Jew named Abe Gordon from New York and a Chinaman from 'Frisco named Kai Jeong. “I'm a rifleman,” I insisted as the incoming chowhounds filed through the line. “This is just a temporary assignment,” I added while pouring gravy on their dessert, “until General Marshall finds a spot for me at SHAEF.”
  2. Abe Gordon and Kai Jeong were top‑notch performers as Army cooks go, but didn't know sickum about their M‑1 rifles. So I volunteered to keep their weapons clean in case our company commander, Captain Bertram C. Finch, pulled a sneaky inspection to detect any presence of grass growing in our gun bolts. In return, Abe and Kai treated me to steaks (beef not goat) and watermelon when I infiltrated the mess hall after‑hours.

  1. Silver Star for gallantry in action 01/13/1945 in Belgium. During a platoon assault on a well defended town, sudden crossfire halted the attack, scattered the men and seriously wounded the company commander. Although wounded himself, he assumed command and reorganized the men as he was hit twice more. Disregarding the injuries, he rallied the men, and personally directed accurate machine gun fire and mortar fire into the hostile position. Only after the fourth wound did he return by foot to the battalion aid station.
  2. Although wounded himself, T/Sgt. Harold R. Johnson, Flint, Mich., assumed command of the company. He was hit twice more while rallying the men, preparing to renew the attack. He personally directed intense, accurate mortar and machine gun fire on enemy automatic weapons, eventually led the men to their objective.

    5. In 1943 he was promoted to Major General as Commander of the 106th Infantry Division. His division was stripped of experienced soldiers to fill units depleted in combat, and then had to be rushed into fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. Attempting to defend a difficult sector and hampered by poor communications, two 106th regiments were compelled to surrender. Jones suffered a heart attack soon afterwards, and had to be evacuated from combat. He retired in October, 1945, and remained active with the 106th Infantry Division veterans’ association, including authoring a regular newsletter column.
