  1. NOT a POW - Just needed the space.  Basic training in Death Valley CA with 305th QM. Left overseas late 11/1943. Treated for pneumonia in Winchester England and again in France 1944. Couldn't talk above a whisper for a month. Transferred from 6974 Reinforcement Depot to 106th/422 INF/C.  Transferred to 118th Regt. Treated for gunshot wound in France. Given some kind of medicine every 4 hours. Had to sign a paper as they didn't know what the effect might be, at 193 General Hospital. Transferred to 922 HAM Ordnance to ship back to the USA on the Queen Mary.
  2. The medicine he was given could have been penicillin, which was fairly new at the time.
  3. His mess kit cup was stolen at some point and he went a good distance away to "obtain a replacement". The replacement he found was actually his as he had hand engraved the countries he'd been in. I still have the cup.

Encountering enemy small arms fire at Schönberg he set up a machine gun in a German farm house. He was finally captured when tanks appeared on the scene. Breaking away with Pvt. Edgar M. Decker of Lee, Massachusetts, he returned to St. Vith, secured trucks and an armored escort and again started back with the rations which he knew would be desperately needed. His trucks were knocked out by German armor but he and Pvt. Decker again returned to Division D.P. loaded trucks and waited in vain for armor to clear the road to Schnee‑Eifel.

  1. Silver Star (as 424/AT) for gallantry in action 12/16/1944 in Germany. Remaining at his post after having been painfully wounded during the intense barrage that signaled theenemy's Ardennes attack, he heroically kept his 57mm anti-tank gun inaction despite a continuing rain of German mortar and artillery fire. Observing three enemy tanks supported by infantry approaching, he coolly withheld his fire until they moved to within 150 yards. The, completely surprising the enemy, and with telling accuracy, he knocked out tow of the tanks in quick succession. When his gun was demolished by a direct hit, and he was forced to withdraw, he skillfully led his shock-dazed crew to safety. GO 1945-065

Soldiers' Medal for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy 05/13/1945 in France. While proceeding in a convoy near Hennebont, France, a truck carrying explosives struck a mine and exploded. The truck burst into flames instantaneously and the ammunition exploded violently. He jumped from his ruck and raced toward a soldier lying near the burning vehicle. With the assistance of three other men, he lifted the injured man, whose clothing was aflame, carried him clear of the blaxing vehicle and ripping off his own jacket, rapidly extinguished the flames. He then helped evacuate the injured to a safe distance from the conflagration. GO 1945-045,

Having been taken prisoner, he and another soldier were forced to ride on the hood of an American jeep driven by their captors and travelled that way until the vehicle neared an American roadblock. Displaying great courage and resourcefulness, he and his companion cried "Germans"and jumped from the jeep into a ditch, thus enabling the Americans to open fire upon the enemy killing one and forcing the other three to surrender. 1. Ed Dorn is written up in some of the books on the 106th. Madsen and Snovel were with him firing 81 mm mortar rounds at Tiger Tanks near Schoenberg for three days until they ran out of ammunition is what he told me, and they are named in the books as well. A great and extremely humble man.
  2. Bronze Star War Department GO 1947-051
  3. Like the machine gunners, the mortar men were without cover, on the forward slope of the hill facing Schönberg, Mentioned in the above paragraphs were mortar men Cassidy, Moss, Almond, Pearsall and Smythe. Corporals Edward W. Dorn, Andres N. Madson Jr., Irvin K. Brough and Robert I. Snovel Jr. manned their mortars and scored three hits in eleven rounds at about 2,100 yards, knocking two enemy self‑propelled guns out of action and crippling a third. Each of the above was recommended for the Silver Star

When a platoon sent to clear a woods of enemy troops was pinned down by severe machine gun fire, SSgt Duff acting as a scout, courageously preceded a six man patrol approaching the woods from the flank to out maneuver the enemy. During this action which completely surprised the enemy, SSgt Duff was seriously wounded, but valiantly disregarding the pain, directed his men by hand signals until they drove the enemy from the woods permitting the platoon to continue its advance.
